Jeffrey Jones | Delicate Touch
Posted on January 10th, 2010 by Ben
Was there a better era for the female form than the 70′s? Curves were lovingly lavished onto book covers, comics, posters, and advertisements. Jeffrey Jones was one of the pioneers of this approach. For 3 years, Jones was given a full page in the National Lampoon to do with as he pleased. He usually filled the page with naked girls who would languish about for a few panels while musing about almost nothing, and yet Jones was able to execute it with a breathtaking grace and sensitivity.
Maybe it was this sensitivity that moved Frank Frazetta himself to call Jones “the greatest living painter”.

Jeffrey Jones is female.

Yeah, I didn’t feel compelled to get into all that. I wanted the work to be the focus.
What do you think?

I understand your intention, but it’s a disservice to the artist to imply the incorrect gender, and it confuses the readers. Although Jeffrey Jones may seem like a masculine name for a female, it doesn’t make the work any less breathtaking.

Is it a disservice? This seems like confusing, complex stuff. I have no idea what the artist would find adequate. I also don’t have the firmest grasp on issues of gender identity. When does a man become a women? If a man created art, and then became a women, does that mean the art from the man era is now the product of a women, or is there a cutoff point where the art is suddenly female produced? Does lifestyle alone dictate gender or does it require an official operation. etc.

Thanks for the great post !! Great art . Ignore the redundant debate . Maybe V is not even aware Jeffrey went through a sex-change . The gender of the artist hardly seems relevant , unless the art itself is about those boundaries … which Jeffrey’s art doesn’t seem to be to me at all . Just great art .
Thanks again .

looking all over the web for his art, thanks. breath taking as i remembered. almost wonder if his ability to create the female images as incredible as he did and his desire and subsequent sex change aren’t connected.

I know what you mean Mike, there is such a sensitivity and maybe even sympathy for the female shape. Especially those pen and ink drawings.
BTW, this piece is wondeful.
